LEGO Ideas

This project was inspired by the natural elegance of magnolia flowers and my desire to challenge myself and create a LEGO set.

Lego Ideas Objective

This project involves designing a magnolia flower using LEGO bricks to highlight intricate floral details and test the balance between aesthetics and structural integrity. The build consists of six flowers—two short, two medium, and two tall—designed to mimic the natural elegance of magnolias.

Challenge: Designing petals that were both sturdy and visually delicate.

Results

Magnolia Blossom managed to reach a total number of 889 supporters, while it didn’t reach the 1k supporters required to continue, I learnt a great deal about designing products and toys to appeal to those of an older age.

As this was created before starting my Master of Industrial Design program, I plan to try again and properly design a set to generate a higher number of supporters and possibly reach the 10k required to go into official review.

Design Process

Planning: Studied pictures of real magnolias and created sketches to map out the petal and stem structures.

Design Process: Selected Lego pieces I felt best matched the petals’ curvature, stem height, and overall shape and also chose soft whites, greens, and subtle accents to give a delicate appearance.

Prototyping: Experimented on Brick 2.0 with Lego brick arrangments to design and test out petals and stems in different positions to see what works best.

Outcome: Six distinct magnolia flowers (two short, two medium, two tall), design to mimic a natural arrangement. Inspired by real flower arrangments.

Iteration: Adjusted heights into short, medium, and tall to create balance and cohension across the designs.
